Our fleet of steam locomotives includes Peckett & Sons. W6 Class Locomotive, GWR 56xx Class Locomotive as well as visiting Locomotives.
Each course will take three participants, who will each be able to drive and fire between Spring Village and Lawley Village, and also have the opportunity to drive and fire to and from Horsehay & Dawley Station. On your course, you could be hauling up to two coaches and Brake Van.


Each participant can be accompanied by up to two guests for free and can add extra guests for £15 each who may travel on the train during the course.

We plan to use GWR 56XX 0-6-2 tank No. 5619 for our steam driver experiences in 2024 (subject to availability)

Your Driver Experience Day starts at 09:00 at Spring Village and finishes there at approximately 15:00
The course includes:

• Explanation of the day's events and safety briefing
• Lunch at the Furnaces Tearoom for participants and guests
• Free year's membership of the Telford Horsehay Steam Trust for the participant, including member's benefits (worth up to £25)
• Free TSR Guide Book

Our popular fleet of powerful diesel locomotives includes Class 08 Shunter Locomotives, Class 142 and Class 144 Pacer DMU's.
Each course will take two participants, who will each be able to drive between Spring Village and Lawley Village, and also have the opportunity to drive to and from Horsehay & Dawley Station. On your course, you could be hauling up to two coaches and Brake Van.

Your Driver Experience Day starts at 0900 at Spring Village and finishes there at approximately 1300.

*Telford Steam Railway reserve the right to change the locomotive/multiple unit prior to the experience taking place if said vehicle is unfit for use.

A ride on the footplate of one of our steam locomotives is a feast for the senses.


You’ll be welcomed onto the footplate by our experienced locomotive crew, who’ll show you how the locomotive works, and the art of keeping the engine running smoothly. After the guard has blown his whistle and given the right away you’ll be off down the line enjoying the best view on the railway.
This experience includes a trip on the line – duration of around 50 minutes. Whatever the special occasion, a footplate experience will create memories to last a lifetime.
You must be in good health and reasonably fit (i.e. able to climb on and off the locomotives from the ground).



Please arrive at Spring Village Station 30 mins before your departure time. One of our team will be on hand to welcome you and give you a short safety briefing

Please note that participants must be over 16 years of age.

Please wear sturdy footwear and clothing that fully covers your arms and legs

Do not attend the experience under the influence of alcohol or drugs

Unique amongst most Heritage Railways are our Guard's Experience Courses. Each course will take the participant, along with a Qualified Guard through the responsibilities and knowledge of a Train Guard. Every participant will get the chance to experience this 1 on 1 experience. The Guard will take you through their daily checks, such as Brake Tests, Checking and Changing Lamps as well as how to dispatch and enter a platform

In your course, you could be responsible for up to two coaches and Brake Van.

Each participant can be accompanied by up to two guests for free and can add extra guests for £15 each who may travel on the train or Brake Van during the course.

Please note that participants must be over 18 yrs

Your Experience Day starts at 09:30 at Spring Village and finishes there at approximately 14:00.

The course includes:
